Between Transitions: Navigating Uncertainties in Service Design

On March 31st 2025, together with the research team of Unsee we organized this event for dissemination and engagement around the results of our research.

This event, hosted by me and prof. Beatrice Villari aimed at showcasing the recent advancements of the UnSee research connected to the emerging paradigmatic shifts that we captured, as well as gathering experiences from design experts and practitioners. We had the pleasure of hosting three international guests whose expertise revolved around design in complex systems, transition design and futures studies.

a transition lens to look at services.jpg

I specifically introduced a transition-oriented perspective through which change can be conceptualized in service design. Looking at the space in between systems, multiple forms of services can emerge from what we called a "window to transformative futures" - services can aim to decompose dominant logics, create chaos, build networks and communities of practice as well as experimenting with niche-level logics beyond the dominant paradigms.

To increment participation, each guest had the time to introduce their perspective and then participating into one of three "unconference circles" which were organized around the questions that emerged from their interventions. In this way participants and experts could learn from eachothers in a more unstructured dialogue and within the safe space of the circle.
